Unique bid auctions: Equilibrium solutions and experimental evidence

    Get PDF
Two types of auction were introduced on the Internet a few years ago and have rapidly been gaining widespread popularity. In both auctions, players compete for an exogenously determined prize by independently choosing an integer in some finite and common strategy space specified by the auctioneer. In the unique lowest (highest) bid auction, the winner of the prize is the player who submits the lowest (highest) bid, provided that it is unique. We construct the symmetric mixed-strategy equilibrium solutions to the two auctions, and then test them in a sequence of experiments that vary the number of bidders and size of the strategy space. Our results show that the aggregate bids, but only a minority of the individual bidders, are accounted for quite accurately by the equilibrium solutions.

The black monk and the blue mystic : the writings and monochromatic paintings of Ad Reinhardt and Yves Klein

This dissertation is an examination of the monochromatic paintings and associated writings of Ad Reinhardt (1913-1967) and Yves Klein (1928-1962). Since its inception in 1918, the modern monochromatic painting has continued to fascinate, puzzle, and even upset viewers. Despite this, artists continue to explore this form. It would be unrealistic to assume that there is one artistic ideology that motivates all monochromatic painters. Trying to uncover all varying ideologies would be too difficult and require research based on the subjective writings of critics and historians. In an attempt to understand the monochrome from the artist's perspective I have analysed texts written by the artists regarding their own artwork. Not only did Reinhardt and Klein paint monochromatic images at the same time in history, but both documented their creative processes in writing. I have examined two edited collections of texts by these artists: Art-as-Art: The Selected Writings of Ad Reinhardt (1975) and the English translation of Overcoming the Problematics of Art: The Writings of Yves Klein (2007). The body of this dissertation uncovers similarities and differences in regards to formal aspects, functional roles, and sources of inspiration associated with these paintings. These include artistic rules regarding colour and line, the intended function of art in life, and a shared affinity for Eastern philosophy and aesthetics. While far from uncovering any universal monochromatic ideology, this examination provides some background on and appreciation for the creative process of monochromatic painting and a basic understanding of the reaction to the form

Crisis leadership in SMEs and the response to COVID-19. An exploratory case study of South Korean SMEs.

The recent outbreak of COVID-19 has been disrupting SMEs (Small-medium sized enterprise) in particular. In a crisis such as COVID-19, leadership has been considered as most important in SMEs, but prior studies showed less emphasis on it. Specifically, there is only a limited amount of research on crisis leadership in SMEs in East Asia. The dissertation explores how South Korean SMEs establish crisis leadership to respond to the impact of the COVID-19. By investigating Korean SMEs, the dissertation attempts to address both leadership in SMEs to respond to COVID-19 and crisis leadership in South Korean SMEs. By interviewing five Korean SMEs owners-senior managers, the dissertation explores the impact of the COVID-19 and their crisis leadership; crisis leadership type and crisis leadership competencies. Our findings reveal that the unique leadership of the Korean SMEs leader-senior managers which is combined with paternalistic leadership and proactive, systematic procedures for crisis management in COVID-19, as well as several factors to explain why this leadership emerged. Therefore, our evidence provides new insight of crisis leadership in SMEs out of the western perspectives and suggests a theoretical proposition of crisis leadership in South Korea SMEs

    Granary Building environmental impact assessment

The Port of Bellingham proposes to partially demolish the Granary Building on the Bellingham New Whatcom redevelopment site located on the downtown waterfront. Partial demolition of the building--removing the northern portion of the building, increasing the distance between the building and the shoreline--is preferable to either complete preservation or total demolition for a number of reasons. Preserving at least some of the original structure would retain historic value within the proposed historic district of the New Whatcom waterfront space. Removing part of the structure would create more of a shoreline buffer to enhance habitat restoration of the adjacent Whatcom Waterway. Partial removal would also increase waterfront access to the former Georgia Pacific site in accordance with the Port\u27s new proposed straight street grid plan. Moreover, this new street grid creates Bloedel Avenue, a road that connects Central Avenue--where the Granary Building sits--to the innards of the New Whatcom site. In terms of sustainable development, strengthening the structural integrity of the building would require a certain degree of seismic upgrades and implementation of new sustainable technologies depending on the proposed future use of the building. However, renovating and reusing the current building would be more environmentally sustainable in the long term than the demolition or no action alternatives

This study aims to identify the concept of digital health literacy by reviewing contemporary literature. For this purpose, we examine not only a way of understating the concept but also its core competencies by comparing them to those of digital literacy and health literacy

Nicotinamide attenuates the decrease in dendritic spine density in hippocampal primary neurons from 5xFAD mice, an Alzheimers disease animal model

Alzheimers disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative disease characterized by memory loss and the presence of amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in the patients brains. In this study, we investigated the alterations in metabolite profiles of the hippocampal tissues from 6, 8, and 12 month-old wild-type (WT) and 5xfamiliar AD (5xFAD) mice, an AD mouse model harboring 5 early-onset familiar AD mutations, which shows memory loss from approximately 5 months of age, by exploiting the untargeted metabolomics profiling. We found that nicotinamide and adenosine monophosphate levels have been significantly decreased while lysophosphatidylcholine (LysoPC) (16:0), LysoPC (18:0), and lysophosphatidylethanolamine (LysoPE) (16:0) levels have been significantly increased in the hippocampi from 5xFAD mice at 8 months or 12 months of age, compared to those from age-matched wild-type mice. In the present study, we focused on the role of nicotinamide and examined if replenishment of nicotinamide exerts attenuating effects on the reduction in dendritic spine density in hippocampal primary neurons from 5xFAD mice. Treatment with nicotinamide attenuated the deficits in spine density in the hippocampal primary neurons derived from 5xFAD mice, indicating a potential role of nicotinamide in the pathogenesis of AD. Taken together, these findings suggest that the decreased hippocampal nicotinamide level could be linked with AD pathogenesis and be a useful therapeutic target for AD.This study was financially supported by the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) grant, funded by the Korean Government (2016R1A2B4012232) and also partly supported by Seoul National University Bundang Hospital Research Fund, South Korea (02–2013-015). SummaryPrimary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a disease characterized by symptoms of upper and lower respiratory tract infections due to abnormal structure and function of cilia.Cardiac involvement is characterized by situs inversus (Kartagener's syndrome in PCD) and other congenital cardiovascular abnormalities. We describe a 34-year-old female with a history of recurrent sinusitis and bronchiectasis but without situs inversus or other congenital cardiac anomalies in whom an association between mitral regurgitation secondary to myxoid degeneration and primary ciliary dyskinesia was suggested
